Maybe it’s you.

By Brian Passell, Ph.D. ·

If a practice is flipping a role every six months, the usual explanation is "there's a shortage of good talent."

Sometimes that's true.

Often, it's worth turning the mirror around.

This is the risk I take in every placement. I can do a deep dive on the practice. I can understand the owner and the culture. I can find the right person, assess them and get them placed.

And it can still fail — because I put them in a place with a bad boss.

In my practice consulting days I saw it over and over: people leaving not because they disliked the work, and not because they disliked dentistry. They left because of the leader of the office.

It sounds almost too obvious to say, but the practices I've seen thrive over the last decade have one thing in common:

It starts at the top.

Set the culture. Set the direction. Give clarity. Make the decisions.

Do that, and good people stay. Skip it, and no recruiter on earth can hire your way out.
